Our School

Welcome to Singleton High School one of the largest schools in NSW - we have been serving our diverse rural, urban, mining and military community for over 80 years.

We are a proudly comprehensive public high school whose students have made their way in the world, both near and far. And while our history is important, it doesn’t define our outlook, potential and future directions. With globalisation, changing labour markets, rapid advances in technology, the growth of social media and the emergence of the ‘Asian’ Century, today’s students must be equipped  with the skills and the resilience to  thrive in a world of change ... critical thinking, working collaboratively, creativity and communicating effectively in a range of media.

The 21st Century education being developed at Singleton High emphasises a solid grounding of literacy, including digital literacy, and numeracy. This is the base from which we aim to develop the 4C’s required for genuine growth and success. Working collaboratively, critical thinking, communicating effectively in a range of media, and creative thinking are being given practical expression through several key initiatives. For example, a renewed emphasis on the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) that are so important in the modern world.

This also involves opportunities with sister school arrangements in Japan and India to develop a more outward looking and informed student body ready to engage in the world. It is also reflected in our continuing commitment to the humanities, creative and performing arts, language and literature, vocational education opportunities that are the envy of other schools, and sport and fitness, all of which contribute to the intellectual and physical well-being of students.

As a comprehensive, public school, Singleton High welcomes all students, whatever their social, cultural, ethnic or academic background.

There are purpose-designed programs for the gifted and talented, and senior students can access the highest levels  of all HSC extension courses, close links with local businesses and work experience programs. All students are benefiting from the school’s focus on reading initiative and this year will see it extended to include a focus on writing. Students not meeting national minimum standards of literacy and numeracy have individual learning plans developed. The school also has six specialised classes for students with particular learning needs.

Singleton High is very much a part of its community; it has strong and growing links with partner primary schools so that a genuine high quality K-12 educational experience is assured for every student. It also has close links with local businesses, work experience programs and sponsorships from some of the large mining companies.

Sited on Wonnaruah land, a focus of the school is to further school to home and school to community communication and collaboration. A particular feature of the school is its success in ‘closing the gap’ for Aboriginal students. Our school’s Aboriginal students NAPLAN results are consistently above the state average. We are proud hosts and supporters of our Clontarf Academy for Aboriginal male students and Kayu Kumpa for female students, as well as our Ka-wul Aboriginal Education and Resource Centre, which are making a real difference to outcome and opportunities for these students.

The high school years are a period in which children grow to young adults. The maturation journey has some bumps along the way and, just as literacy and numeracy are the intellectual foundations for success, the wellbeing of students to learn in a safe, supportive and caring school environment is just as important. We are committed to ensuring Singleton High continues to be a great public school, which all of its members and its community can be proud to be a part of.

We are committed to building strong foundations for learning facilitated by a culture of high expectations through innovation. All our school community members are known, valued and cared for.
