Surviving Your Final Year

SPECIAL REPORT: SURVIVING THE FINAL YEAR !!!
Access this report and other resources at Surviving Your Final Year.

It’s no secret that the end of school can be a huge source of anxiety for both students and parents alike. Studies have shown that over 40% of final year students suffer from high-level anxiety or stress, with some even suffering from depression.

It is important to prepare a student’s brain for success. Studies show there is a clear link between students taking care of their health, and their overall productivity during the final year of school. Understanding how best to support your child’s health and wellbeing during this time will help them perform at their best. The student brain has a lot going on, so understanding how it works will help them get the most out their brain power. Acknowledge that not all stress is bad. The art is in finding the right balance. Having the right amount of stress can encourage students to be at their optimal level of alertness, and improve behavioural and cognitive performance. It helps tune their brain and focus.

In this Special Report, parents and care givers will be presented with a number of strategies on how best to support their child during the final year at school. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child or student, please contact the LST Team, Counsellor or Head Teacher of Wellbeing.

Coronavirus Update

NSW HEALTH ADVICE re CORONAVIRUS

The NSW Government has today (28 January 2020) requested that children who have visited China in the last two weeks NOT attend school or childcare services until 14 days have lapsed from their date of departure from China. Health Minister Brad Hazzard and Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said although the risk to children is very low, the NSW Government has taken this step as a precautionary measure.

“I’ve been advised that it’s not medically necessary, but the NSW Government has acted in line with community expectations to ensure the safest possible environment for our students,” Mr Hazzard said. “The internationally recognised incubation period for the coronavirus is 14 days, so this is the logical timeframe to ask students to refrain from attending school. After this time, there is no risk.

“Advice about not attending school has already been provided to any close contacts of confirmed cases.”

The Commonwealth Department of Health has confirmed that all passengers disembarking from planes from China are being given comprehensive information about coronavirus in both English and Mandarin. NSW Health has been contacting passengers who were on the same planes as confirmed cases to provide appropriate advice and has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia.

Ms Mitchell said the Department of Education has issued guidance to schools and childcare services across NSW on protocols in the event of a child becoming sick. “Although the risk remains very low for children, we believe it is the right thing to do to take this extra step and will continue to update the community with advice,” Ms Mitchell said.

There are currently four confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in NSW. All cases had travelled to Wuhan, China or had contact with a confirmed case in China. Parents with concerns can contact their local Public Health Unit on 1300 066 055 for advice or visit the dedicated NSW Health information page at:
Help for families preparing for return to school

The NSW Department of Education is working to support school communities affected by the summer bushfires to ensure a return to school as normal as possible for as many students as possible.

We encourage students and families who have been affected directly and indirectly to seek practical help through government and non-government agencies such as the NSW government’s Office of Emergency Management. The department also provides advice to assist parents, teachers and students.

The Office of Emergency Management has a list of bushfire recovery assistance contacts including emergency accommodation, animal welfare, recovery allowances and payments, farm and business assistance, legal assistance, water assistance, and counselling.

Affected staff can seek support through the Department’s Employee Assistance Program during the holiday and in term time, and counselling will be available for students and staff through their school once term begins.

The assessment of school buildings and facilities affected by the fires was started by officers of School Infrastructure NSW as soon as it was safe to do so, in order that school communities can be advised as soon as possible about the status of their school, and, if necessary, alternative arrangements.

It is expected that the vast majority of students will be returning to school as normal: advice about preparing for the start of school is on the Department’s Back to School page, but families facing any additional difficulty can also contact their school once term begins.

The school safety page will be updated with a list of government and non-government schools that are not operational.

Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Building Resilience

Access to the Resilience edition of School TV.

Resilience is one of those skills that all kids need and should have. It refers to their ability to cope and adapt in situations when confronted with challenges such as adversity, trauma, tragedy, or even stress. It is essential to their mental health and wellbeing as part of their journey to adulthood. It is a skill that can be learned from an early age through the support of an adult role model.

However, being resilient does not mean your child won't experience any difficulties, but it will better equip them to manage those situations. Over-protective parenting can be viewed as being unhelpful towards the building of resilience. Although this may be a natural instinct, potentially experiencing failure is all part of the process. Encouraging children to take healthy risks will help them trust their capacity to deal with uncomfortable situations and increase their capacity for courage.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will gain an understanding of how to support their child’s brave behaviour to help them adapt and build resilience. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Y12 Exam Stress

SPECIAL REPORT: Y12 EXAM STRESS

Students in their final year of school are considered a high-risk group for depression and anxiety. Sleep deprivation, diet and social media are some of the biggest issues faced by this group of teens. Therefore it is vitally important that a student's mental health is looked after as well as their physical health.

Keeping things in perspective for students and parents alike, can help prevent everyone getting overwhelmed. Although this final year is important, it is not necessarily the most important year of your child's life.

There are many strategies that students can implement to help themselves. Parents can provide support, not only emotionally, but also practically by keeping their child well-nourished and encouraging physical activity.

In this special report, parents will find useful tips to support their child during this often stressful time. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered here and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.

Blended Families

SCHOOLTV REPORT: BLENDED FAMILIES

Blended or stepfamilies, come in all shapes and sizes. Today, the term “blended family” is more commonly used as opposed to “stepfamily”. Although their original meanings differ slightly, today both terms are used interchangeably. This is mostly due to some of the negative connotations associated with fairytale characters such as the evil stepmother or stepsister.

The blended family is the fastest growing family dynamic in the world with one in five families now being a ‘step’ or ‘blended’ family. However, when families “blend,” it rarely progresses smoothly. Some children resist change, and parents become frustrated when the new family doesn’t function in the same way as the previous one.

For many step-parent’s, the greatest challenge lies in determining what their role is within the family. The process can be both rewarding and challenging. Children affected by the union of a new couple may not be excited at the prospect of becoming part of a new family.

Although blending families requires adjustment and patience from everyone involved, in this edition of SchoolTV, parents will be given some guidelines of real expectations that can help their new family work through the growing pains. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

What’s next after high school?

Is your child in Year 9 to 12 curious about their career choices? Now they can use LifeLauncher, a free online tool to explore and simplify their career choices.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Encourage your child to jump online and complete the 5-minute personality and subject quizzes to be matched to a range of career options that suit their passions and strengths.

If they take both quizzes, they’ll get more refined suggestions. They can even create free online pinboards to shortlist the courses and jobs that interest them.

When your child creates an account, they can save their searches and build a real understanding of the opportunities and pathways open to them.

What can your child learn about their career options?

Your child can explore the weekly salary of the career options they’re interested in. They’ll also find the employment and growth rates of those careers and the number of workers currently in those fields in Australia.

Each career option shows them the education they need as well as other related careers. They can follow links to other sites to find out more about a course to help them find the best provider for them.

Launch into the future today

Use this tool to chat with your child about their post-school options in a meaningful way.

Inspire your child to find their career match today at LifeLauncher.nsw.gov.au.

VISIBLE WELLBEING LAUNCHED
Over 350 staff from Singleton High and schools throughout our region have embarked on a Visible Wellbeing (VWB) journey. Participants congregated at the Civic Centre and were introduced to the concepts, activities and successes of VWB by Professor Lea Waters and her colleagues, which is based around the SEARCH model of Strengths, Emotional Management, Attention and Awareness, Relationships, Coping and Habits & Goals.

Some practical applications of the strategy were presented by Jonathan Russell, Principal of King Street Public School. The two year program will enhance student and staff wellbeing, personal development, learning and success, it is being led by Principal Jo Scott from Singleton High School.

This major investment in Singleton’s Education Community is sponsored by Yancoal.
Positive Parenting

Despite the best efforts of parents around the world, the reality is, there is no such thing as the ‘perfect parent’. However, arming yourself with the right information is a good start!

Research shows, that one of the most important protective factors in the lives of young people, is a close relationship with a supportive adult. With the mental health of today’s young people being at an all-time low, it is simply not enough to parent effectively. Parents need to familiarise themselves with practical skills, knowledge and strategies when it comes to raising children.

Many parents today are over-protective, resulting in children being less independent, unable to problem-solve or self-regulate. Parents are failing to set clear boundaries, which is unfortunately making kids feel less secure. There is too much pressure on kids today. Parents fill their days with too many activities in an effort to avoid their child’s boredom.

In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will learn what is the best approach for primary and secondary school aged children. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

HSC Seminar Day

Today we held our 20th annual HSC Seminar Day ... buses started arriving at 8:30am under stark blue skies on a chilly but windless day. About 1000 Y11 and Y12 students from over 30 Government, Catholic and Independent schools from across the region come to hear from expert teachers, HSC markers and other professionals.

Our 40 seminar presenters provide students with the latest developments in HSC content and exam techniques for over 30 HSC courses. The seminars are held across 14 venues centred around York Street in Singleton from 9:50am to 5:00pm and only costs $55.

The success and renown of our HSC Seminar Day is due to hard work of Singleton High School staff and Student Representative Council members, support from the NSW Department of Education, the wider Singleton community and both local and regional business sponsorship.

Thank you to everyone who made this day such a great success and check out more photos in our two galleries of the 2019 HSC Seminar Day.

Pedestrians are our most vulnerable road users and make-up half of all fatalities from bus crashes in metropolitan areas. Bus Safety Week promotes safety for pedestrians, who should:

Plan ahead and don't rush for the bus

Obey traffic signals and cross with care

Avoid being distracted by mobile devices

Stand back from the kerb when waiting for a bus.

Our Prinicipal, Jo Scott, recently attended a Glencore community and education sponsorship event to further develop the dynamic relationship Singleton High has with Glencore.

Glencore supports a number of valuable initiatives and programs at Singleton High that significantly benefit our students: a major partnership with the Clontarf Foundation, sponsorship of the HunterWiSE Outreach program to promote STEM learning to female students, Gulawa scholarships for Aboriginal students, scholarships to help Year 12 students make the transition to University, and a number of other grants for training programs.

We greatly appreciate Glencore’s support of our students, their learning and their career options.

What Type of Parent?

Parenting Styles Report

There are so many different opinions offered on how best to parent. New parents will often have firm beliefs about how they wish to balance love and discipline, but this ideal often goes out the window when a toddler throws their first tantrum in the supermarket!

Raising children can bring parents and caregivers great joy despite many learning ‘on the job’ and growing into the role through experience and understanding. Children will always flourish in a warm and loving environment, supported by clear guidance.

In this Special Report, parents and caregivers can gain a greater understanding of the four defined parenting styles by taking part in the quiz. It can guide parents towards deciding which style they wish to adopt and the effects it may have on their children.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help. Click the title above to access this episode.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Please Tap On & Off

Hunter Valley Buses (HVB), as a provider of school bus services to your child's school, ould like to address some concerns regarding the current use of School Opal Cards.

Transport NSW (TNSW) provides eligible school students with free or subsidised travel under the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) between home and school during school terms. There is no provision under the scheme to fund the carriage of students to or from any other location.

WHEN USING A SCHOOL OPAL CARD, IT IS A CONDITION OF USE THAT STUDENTS MUST TAP ON AT THE BEGINNING OF A TRIP AND TAP OFF AT THE END OF A TRIP AT AN OPAL CARD READER.

Our data indicates that only 40% of students with School Opal Cards are using them correctly.

Data gathered from Opal taps are used to determine the number of services provided to your school. If students don't tap on and tap off, lack of perceived patronage could lead to a service appearing underutilised, prompting a review of the number of services provided.

As a part of our campaign and ongoing commitment to provide the level of service needed for your school, HVB may have visible presence of Customer Support Officers both on buses and at schools to assist students in the correct use of School Opal Cards.

HVB are asking that students become aware of the following travel options to avoid any possible repercussions with either our Customer Support Team or TNSW Revenue Protection Officers:

SCHOOL OPAL CARD

Eligible students can apply or update their details online at https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/#/

Students who are not eligible for a free School Opal Card have the following options:

SCHOOL TERM BUS PASS

Students who don't qualify for free school travel, may be eligible to purchase a School Term Bus Pass

https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/#/termBusPass

CHILD/YOUTH OPAL CARD

Children aged 4 - 15 years are entitled to concession fares. Eligible secondary students aged 16 years and older also pay concession fares with their proof of entitlement card

https://transportnsw.info/tickets-opal/opal/get-opal-card

REQUEST AN APPLICATION REVIEW

If your application was unsuccessful, you can request a review by clicking on the 'Request a Review' Link in your application status screen or via the SSTS website using your application ID

https://ssts-apply.transport.nsw.gov.au/ApplySSTS/TrackApplication.html

Students that do not have a valid Opal card are required to travel with a receipt for School Opal Card application/replacement or pay a fare to travel to and from school on our buses. Failure to produce a valid Opal Card will result in the driver or Customer Support Officers recording the students name for HVB to follow-up with the school and Parent/Carer concerned.

Revenue Protection Officers may issue a warning or fine for students who do not have a valid ticket for travel. If a student's travel pass is lost, stolen or damaged please apple for a replacement (a fee may be charged) at https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/#/reportPass

While waiting for your replacement school Opal Card to arrive, students are required to travel with a receipt for School Opal Card replacement or a valid ticket for travel.

Students or Parents/Carers with any concerns regarding Opal cards and travel to/from school should contact TNSW at https://transportnsw.info/contact-us/feedback/passes-concessions-feedback

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

CLONTARF PARTNER MORNING TRAINING SESSION

The Singleton High Clontarf Academy recently held a Partners Morning Training Session involving representatives from Glencore, Thiess, Programmed & Skilled, Compass, Singleton Police, NSW Health and the Australian Defence Force. The boys and the partners participated in an AFL focused training session and there were plenty of high fives and laughs during the session. After the training session the boys had a BBQ breakfast and the opportunity to interact with the partners who attended. I would like to make a special mention to the 30 + Singleton academy boys who attended, and represented themselves, Singleton High and the Clontarf Foundation in a positive manner.

Stafa Shines in Loss

Singleton’s Stafa Shines v Muswellbrook High.

In the Upper Hunter divisional day for the Under 14 Boys Cricket, high expectations were put on the Singleton team, led by captain Alex Stafa. While a late withdrawal from Kurri Kurri made the path to round two slightly easier, there was always going to be the added pressure of having our local rivals Muswellbrook in the same pool.

Once Muswellbrook easily accounted for Maitland Grossman, all eyes were on the anticipated derby and some key match ups between bat and ball.

After losing the toss, but getting to bat, openers Hamish Snape and Oliver Gunn looked to take the shine off the ball and lay a platform for the rest of the team. Both boys unfortunately succumbed to fine deliveries and an impressive slips catch.

This brought Stafa and Brandon Carman to the crease and they steadied the ship, while still boosting the run rate. A quick fire 36 for Stafa was looking ominous until a miscued shot saw his departure.

While Carman and Clancy Cameron tried to continue applying pressure, a couple of good balls from the bowlers brought about a tail end collapse. Defending 67 was going to be a big ask.

Wickets were required and quickly. Stafa opened the bowling and his pace, matched with the greasy ground conditions and inconsistent light made it hard work for both batter and keeper. But a ball colliding at speed into the stumps was all that was asked and in the first over, delivered.

In the second over, Kamrann Harman showed patience and maturity to combine with Carman to convert a running mix up into a run out. Two down ... Wickets 3 and 4 soon followed with some more accurate bowling from Stafa, with Muswellbrook only achieving 14 runs at this point. While the spirits in the boys were high,

Muswellbrook showed patience and depth to see off the opening 8 overs, while still adding runs to the board. While Stafa did bag a 4th wicket and Lachlan Fleming picked up a consolation scalp, the risk/reward approach with pace at the cost of runs from edges or byes to get quick wickets didn’t quite pay off as the score was run down with the loss of 6 wickets in 12 overs.

The camaraderie and sportsmanship, as always, is to be commended, especially in a game where Muswellbrook seized all of their tight opportunities to gain the upper hand. To hang in and apply pressure and nearly achieve the unexpected made the opposition nervous and showed our own level of resilience.

While it is stumps for the Under 14s this year, expect to see a number of these boys making the step to Opens by the end of this year and beyond for Alex Stafa, who led from the front with both bat and ball, no doubt will be donning at the very least the yellow and blue for Hunter and hopefully a CHS blue in years to come.

A final thank you to the cricketing parents for their ongoing support, getting the boys to the game and likely washing of the whites after a muddy day in the field!

Nick Mulvihill - Coach

Talking about Christchurch

You can view the Christchurch edition of SchoolTV here.

The Christchurch massacre is one of the most extreme acts of terrorism the world has seen in recent times. For New Zealand, it was a loss of innocence. SchoolTV was actually filming in Auckland when news broke of the harrowing events unfolding in Christchurch.

Unfortunately, this will impact on many kids throughout Australia and New Zealand. Some parents and care givers may struggle to explain this tragedy to their young people, many of whom are already struggling with high levels of anxiety about the state of their world.

It is important to put this event into context for children of all ages. Although we cannot control what happens in our world, we can choose the way we respond. The distressing nature of this event will never be forgotten, but at the same time we should not allow it to permanently disturb or destroy our future generations.

In this Special Report, parents and care givers will be provided with practical strategies on how to talk their children in a reassuring manner. It will also highlight the necessity to be aware of the signs of trauma, should a child be adversely affected. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

The Tell Them From Me student survey will provide school principals and school leaders with insight into student engagement, wellbeing and effective teaching practices at their school, from the perspective of students. The survey is confidential and can be used either as a one-off survey or to identify trends within schools over time and better inform school priorities. The survey is offered once a year, with the option of completing a second snapshot within the year if schools wish. School leaders receive their school's data within three business days of closing the survey.

Coping with Grief and Loss

Access the Grief and Loss edition of SchoolTV.

Grief is a natural response to loss. It has no set pattern and everyone experiences grief differently. Children and adults grieve differently due to their developmental stage. This can prove difficult for parents to understand and cope with.

Young children can struggle to understand the permanency of the loss and can express grief through tantrums or regressive behaviour. Teens on the other hand may not know how to express their grief and will need some space to process their loss.

Some may choose to grieve alone as they don't want to stand out or be seen as not coping. Whilst others who have a greater understanding, may start to question their own mortality.

There is no specific time frame in dealing with grief, it is up to the individual. For some it can take weeks and months, while for others their grief can last for years.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

World of Maths

Y7 WORLD OF MATHS IMAGE GALLERY

Yesterday our Y7 students enjoyed a great day of Maths challenges at the King Street Primary hall. World of Maths is a unique travelling mathematics show that provides fun, colourful, hands-on, mathematical, problem solving activities for students.

The program has been designed to cater for all abilities with seventeen large, colourful displays/activities covering ages from 10 to 14 year old.

There are activities belonging to the strands of: number, space, measurement, chance and data and logical thinking and sequencing.

All activities meet the national curriculum requirements.

The instructions and questions on the displays make each session a guided discovery lesson, where the students solve a variety of problems, discover number patterns, identify geometric properties, think logically and apply mathematics to the physical world.

By giving students this experience, they have an opportunity to acquire a variety of different skills and strategies needed for problem solving.

Surviving Year 12

Every year, the media exposes us to the hype and pressure relating to the final year of secondary school. However, putting things into perspective for students and parents alike, can help prevent everyone getting overwhelmed. Although this final year is important, it will not be the most important year of your child’s life. It is crucial for parents to reinforce the mantra of ‘you are more than your ATAR’.

A student’s performance in Year 12 is only a point in time measured by their ability to sit an exam. If the desired ATAR score is not achieved at the end of the day, there are other options available to your child. It will not define their happiness. There will be many other pathways available to them to help them reach their goals.

Smartphones at School

Currently, school policies around the use of electronic devices during school hours vary widely. Technology does have a role to play in the classroom, but this needs to be facilitated. Personal mobile phones, on the other hand, are proving to be a distraction for students in terms of their access to social media sites, as well as potentially being a source of bullying activities.

There is a growing concern around this issue, and schools also have a legal duty of care to keep students safe and provide them with a secure environment in which to learn.

Not only is distraction and a lack of sleep a big issue relating to mobile phone use, but there is also the threat of online predators and cyberbullying. Research shows that one in four children, under the age of 12, are being stalked, harassed or abused.

The challenge is to help young people find a balance and learn to manage their school work, have a social life and get the good parts out of technology. Mobile phones are changing our young people's behaviour in ways that could not have been predicted.

Family feedback about schools always welcome

We know the quality of the relationship between families and schools has a direct impact on student wellbeing and educational outcomes.

There will be times when parents and carers want to ask a question, raise an issue or make a complaint about our schools and it can be hard for families to know where to start. Families have told us that it can be difficult to find the right person to talk to, or don’t know what steps to take to bring an issue to someone’s attention.

A short video, produced in consultation with schools, is helping families find the right person if they have a question or want to raise an issue, make a complaint or provide a compliment. The video encourages families to contact their school or the department early and in a positive way to help resolve any issues together.

The video complements information on our website and is an accessible way for families to find out about the complaints process. Positive feedback is also important and families are encouraged to let us know when something has gone well.

Visit the complaints, compliments and suggestions webpage for more information.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.
